IIT Mandi to hold Workshop on Advanced Composites for Aerospace in Feb 2020. Over the last decade, composite materials have found large scale applications in the civil, defence and commercial aerospace industry. The trend is always reaching new highs powered by the cutting edge improved design, and manufacturing processes.

With the advent of cheap sensor technologies and powerful computational facilities, condition monitoring has come up as another avenue to ensure safety and serviceability of composite materials in use in the aircrafts. Overall, this has opened several avenues in research and application of composite materials in aviation industries.

This course will cover three aspects of composites pertinent to aerospace: recent advancements in the design aspect of composites, the processing and product development knowledge related to composites and finally, the condition monitoring of composites.

Objective

The primary objectives of the workshop are as follows:

  • Introduction to Composite Materials: Basics and Fundamentals.
  • Manufacturing techniques for Polymer Matrix Composites, Metal Matrix Composites and Ceramic Matrix Composites
  • Mechanics of Composite Materials
  • Introduction to Finite Element Method for the design analysis of Composite materials
  • Micro-macro mechanics-based analysis using ANSYS and DIGIMAT software
  • Condition monitoring of composites and application of machine learning
  • Hands on experience with composite condition monitoring
  • Exposure to cutting edge research on composites in aerospace industries (will be presented by Scientists from Aeronautics Research & Development Board, DRDO).

  • Manufacturing techniques for different composite types used in aerospace industries
  • Mechanics of Composite Materials
  • Techniques of condition monitoring in composites with machine learning approaches
  • Introduction to commercial software (ANSYS, DIGIMAT, ABAQUS etc.). A primer on relevant programming languages (MATLAB, Python)

  • Engineers, researchers and scientists in academic institutions and research laboratories pursuing research in the field of materials, structural and thermal design analysis.
  • Student at all levels (Diploma/B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./M.Tech./M.S./Ph.D.) or Faculty from Engineering Institutes / Colleges / Polytechnics.
