Applications are now open for the UNWTO Sustainable Development Goals Global Startup Competition 2020.

Dive into the world’s largest call to reach the most disruptive startups that directly contribute to accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Led by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the UN agency responsible for promoting sustainable, accessible, and inclusive tourism, this Competition aims to encourage the global innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to embrace sustainability and to deliver impact during the United Nations Decade of Action starting this year.

Categories

This Competition features 17 categories, each one representing a Sustainable Development Goal. Each participating startup should select the SDG in which can generate the greatest impact.

  • Pitch at a UNWTO Demo Day
  • Curated mentorship program including one-on-one and in-group sessions focused on Intellectual Property (IP), sustainability, business and leadership
  • Access to technological support

  • Potential pilot project with private-sector collaborators and institutions.
Eligibility

Startups from all walks of life, from all over the world and all economic sectors are invited to participate. They must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be innovative in nature providing value-added solutions
  2. Be sustainability-driven
  3. Be scalable: to have the potential for international growth and potential to be applied in corporations and destinations (countries, regions)
  4. Be an Early Stage or Series A startup
  5. Have a tested pilot and business plan
  6. Have been accelerated before
  7. Have a full-time team

All ways of innovation are welcome: new methods, processes, governance models, social impact initiatives, and technologies.

Evaluation Criteria

Participating startups will be assessed according to their:

  • Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals
  • Ease of value capture via collaboration with the startup
  • Potential business impact
  • Maturity of the product/technology
  • Maturity of the team and the organization
  • Partnership readiness

    Hi, am Joseph I live Zambia, I want to find out, do you offers grants, am lacking some funds I want to open a factory of cooking oil processing plant and my business Name is: Jokango Hardware and General Dealers is a start-up Entrepreneur business working to create an enabling environment for the value chain in Zambia. It is owned by Joseph Ngombo the proprietor. The Enterprise is working on cooking oil processing. Through this project, the enterprise is promoting a value chain with farmers which farm up crops such as Soya beans, Groundnuts, Sunflower, Avocado etc: The project is working to help reduce the high levels of poverty, hunger and malnutrition among the beneficiaries. Also helping farmers to employ new methods of farming that work for high yield and quality products. The project will increase the employment levels both loyal and in the value chain. We intend to procure processing machines, Raw material, Packages and for running cost. Thus as a start-up, we don’t have funds to meet the requirements are; Cooking oil machine, Raw material, Packaging, Filling&capping machine, and Transportation.
