Summer School on Empirical Finance & Accounting Research by IIM Kolkata [May 1-10]: Register by Mar 15: Expired


The Financial Research and Trading Laboratory (FRTL, Finance Lab) of IIM Calcutta is organizing the 6th summer school on Empirical Finance and Accounting Research. This eleven-day program will have two components: 10-day fully residential campus sessions during May 1 – 10, 2021; and 1-day online presentations on June 12, 2021.

IIM Calcutta was established in 1961 as the first national-level institution in the field of management education by the Government of India in collaboration with the Sloan School of Management at MIT and with the support of the Government of West Bengal and the Ford Foundation.


During these 10-days, participants will be exposed to scholarly research papers from prestigious journals in Accounting, Finance, and Governance fields. These papers are carefully chosen by experts and contain the following two features:

  • talk about interesting research problems and focus on strong methodology; and
  • replicable empirical findings.

The participants will be guided by a team of eminent faculty to walk through these papers to understand the ‘the art of writing’ high-quality papers and in the process, learn solid research methods. This year, they have merged the pre-summer school segment with the research summer school. The tutorials on Econometrics are now an integral part of the summer school to help participants learn important statistical methods and techniques commonly used in research in Accounting, Finance, and Governance.

Who can Attend?

Assistant Professors in the area of Finance and Accounting and doctoral students in relevant areas are eligible to register for research summer school. Please note that faculty at the level of Associate Professor and Professor should have at least one publication in relevant areas.  As there are limited seats, preference will be given in the order of applications received.

Course Fees

Applicants selected to participate in the research summer school will have to pay a fee of ₹ 64,500 plus applicable GST per person for participants from India. The amount is payable online in two installments:

  • Rs. 34,500 + applicable GST payable at the time of registration;
  • Rs. 30,000 + applicable GST payable by April 15, 2021 (this amount will be waived off if the program is held entirely online/ non-residential; we will decide in the first week of April and inform the participants by April 7, 2021).

The fee will cover course materials, accommodation, all meals, and light refreshment during the research summer school. Fees are non-refundable unless the Research Summer School is canceled due to unavoidable situations.

Interested persons are requested to apply within 15 March 2021 midnight by email to Applications should mention the choice of one/ two focus areas for the research project and also include a 2-page pdf version of their CV, which includes the name/ venue/ year of the conferences they have presented scholarly papers, their scholarly publications, and pipeline (scholarly papers that are completed but yet to be published).

Admission will be on a rolling basis. Selected candidates will be informed within 7-days of their application and must register within 7-days of their selection.
