Applications are invited for the following temporary post of Project Associate under the project titled “Advanced Gas Turbine Engine Technologies” in the Dept. of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras.
MS/M.Tech (7.5 CGPA and above), or BE/B.Tech (CGPA 8.0 and above) with a valid gate score. Experience with Python and DAQ systems such as NI and Lab view will be advantageous. Scientific publication record in reputed journals will be a plus. Immediate joiners preferred.
Hydrogen powered gas turbine engine has been a topic of active research and is certainly an attractive option due to reduction in carbon footprint. However, the specific fuel energy of H2 poses additional challenges in the thermal management aspects of components downstream of the combustors, due to gas temperatures reaching 2000K when compared to a conventional gas turbine.
The current project aims at addressing the thermal management challenges through using secondary coolants such as super critical CO2 (sCO2) at a select location of the gas turbines and advancing heat exchangers for oil cooling and fuel preheating leveraging advanced manufacturing options. In addition to gas turbine applications, sCO2 is also being considered as a working fluid for next generation heat pumps and refrigeration systems.
One of the first sCO2 based heat pump facility working in transcritical mode has been installed at IITM in collaboration with NTNU, Norway. Further studies and developments are planned to improve heat exchangers and system design to translate sCO2 based heat pumps into the Indian industry.
