The Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research is a public-private partnership (PPP) between Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), which is an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
This scheme is aimed at encouraging young, talented, enthusiastic and result-oriented scholars to take up industry-relevant research. Under this scheme, the full-time Ph.D. scholars get double the money that they would otherwise get for doing research.
Maximum government fellowship in India at any academic or research institute is approximately Rs 36,400 per month, including House Rent Allowance (HRA) for SRF category. Under the Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research, the scholars get double the JRF/SRF as scholarship (as per applicable slabs).
While one-half of this scholarship comes from the government, the second half comes from a partner company which also works closely with the candidate on the research project. The first batch commenced in 2013. The scheme has been made open-ended since September 2014, allowing aspirants to apply anytime within 14 months from their Ph.D. registration.
Following is a step-by-step guide for the application process:-
- Register as a student on the portal www.primeministerfellowshipscheme.in.
- Download the Call for Proposal and Document Checklist.
- Tie up with a company and get the required undertakings signed by a valid signatory in the company as well as in the host institute.
- Collect all documents and make digital copies of each.
- Fill the application form online (the form cannot be downloaded and requires net connectivity while filling).
- Submit application.
- Do not send any physical copy of the application/documents to CII.
Apply before 25th May 2018 to be evaluated in the current selection round.
However, this being an open ended scheme, scholars can apply anytime during the year subject to the condition that the doctoral fellow should have taken admission in full-time Ph.D. in last 14 months from the date of submission of application in any recognized Indian university/institute/research laboratory. Scholars who apply after May 25th will be considered for the next round.
In case of a different admission/enrollment and registration date, the first date of admission in full-time Ph.D. will be considered. In case of any dispute regarding submission date, the decision of the Apex Council will be considered as final. No hard copies of any kind need to be sent to CII; only soft copies are required to be uploaded as indicated on the form.
