IIT Gandhinagar is looking for bright and dedicated young scholars interested in research to join as Ph.D. scholars. Prospective students satisfying the eligibility criteria are encouraged to acquaint themselves with the research areas of our faculty members for a suitable match of interest.

IIT Gandhinagar also offers a Start Early Ph.D. Fellowship with additional financial support for exceptionally qualified undergraduate students from select colleges wishing to start on a direct Ph.D. program after B.Tech.

Qualifications
  1. For Biological Engineering: At least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in: MSc (Biosciences / Biochemistry / Chemistry / Zoology / Botany); BTech/MTech (Biochemical / Biotechnology / Bioinformatics / Biophysics / Biomaterials / Biomedical Engineering) or equivalent degree and related programs.
  2. For Chemical Engineering: First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in BE/BTech/ME/MTech or equivalent degree in Chemical Engineering OR related branches of Engineering.
  3. For Chemistry: At least 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in: MSc (Inorganic Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry/ Organic Chemistry/ General Chemistry/ Physical Chemistry/ Biochemistry/ Bioinformatics/ Computational Biology/ Applied Chemistry.
  4. For Civil Engineering: First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in BE/BTech/ME/MTech or equivalent degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field.
  5. For Cognitive Science: 60% (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in BTech/MTech/MSc or equivalent OR 55% (50% for SC/ST/PD) or 5.5 (5.0 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in: MA equivalent.
  6. For Computer Science & Engineering: BE/BTech/MTech/ME in CS/EC/EE with 65% marks (60% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.5 (6.0 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 OR MSc in Mathematics/Physics/Bioinformatics or related areas with 1st class or 65% marks (60% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.5 (6.0 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 and strong interest in computer science and engineering.
  7. For Humanities & Social Sciences: 55% (50% for SC/ST) or 5.5 (5.0 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in: MA or equivalent. OR 60% (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in BTech/MTech/MSc or equivalent.
  8. For Earth Sciences: MSc (Geology, Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Environmental Sciences, Remote Sensing, Geography or related subjects) with 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or a CPI/CGPA of 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) out of 10. Must be CSIR-NET, INSPIRE fellowship or GATE qualified.
  9. For Electrical Engineering: First Class or 65% marks (60% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.5(6.0 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in BE/BTech/ME/MTech or Equivalent degree in the broad area of Electrical and/or Electronics engineering,
  10. For Mechanical Engineering: First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in: BE/BTech/ME/MTech/MS or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering .
  11. For Material Science & Engineering: First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 in: BE/ BTech/ MTech/ MS or equivalent degree in Materials Science/ Metallurgical/ Mechanical/ Manufacturing/ Electrical/ Electronics Engineering/ Physics/ Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Chemical Engineering.
  12. For Maths: M.A./M.Sc. in Mathematics with at least First Class or 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST/PD) CPI/CGPA on the scale of 10 OR BE/BTech with at least 60% (55% for SC/ST/PD) or 6.0 (5.5 for SC/ST) CPI/CGPA will be considered.
  13. For Physics: MSc (in Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Comp. Science) or MTech (in related areas of Physics) or BE/BTech in Engineering Physics with 60% marks (55% for SC/ST/PD) or a CPI/CGPA of 6.0 out of 10.0 (5.5/10.0 for SC/ST/PD candidates).
Financial Support

Students joining the Ph.D. program as regulars (RR) will be considered for Institute Fellowship based on the following norms:

  • 1. Post Graduate Degree in Basic Science with NET/GATE Qualification or Graduate Degree in Professional Courses (B.Tech/B.E.) with NET/GATE Qualification or Post Graduate Degree in Professional Courses (M.Tech/M.E. etc): Rs. 31,000/- per month.
  • 2. Qualifications mention at (i) above with two years of Research Experience: Rs. 35,000/- per month.
