About the Theme
Unemployment rates surged as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt economic processes around the world. On the other hand, lockdowns and halt of economic activities imposed by governments brought improvement on some environmental indicators such as air quality. At the outset, it seems that there are tradeoffs between the economy and the environment. It is then imperative to ask: is it possible to strike a balance between full employment and a sound ecosystem? Is it feasible that we increase employment without sacrificing the environment?
The Second Law of Ecology clearly states: “everything must go somewhere”. It is undeniable that our present economic model; the sector of production, distribution, and consumption incurs too much waste, and this waste must go somewhere. Oceans full of plastics, landfills that cannot any longer accommodate new trash, and polluted bodies of water are among the effects of this wastefulness. The future will be confronted with a paradoxical scenario: an increasing population will share the Earth’s dwindling natural resources. Therefore, it is necessary to come up with a new model that ensures sustainability. The concept of a “circular economy” promises this.
