About the Webinar

PeaceX is organising a LIVE webinar on the theme: “Period Poverty in Conflict Zones”, with Ms İlayda Eskitaşçıoğlu, on the occasion of the ‘International Day of the Girl Child’. This is the Second webinar under our exclusive ’17 for 75′ series, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.

About the Theme

Period Poverty refers to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products and also clean water, toilets, and period education. In several countries around the globe, both developed and developing, women, transgenders, non-binary people (people who exist outside of the male-female binary) are unable to hygienically manage menstruation because of the stigma surrounding it. This stems from the belief that menstruation is “impure”, causing several communities to ostracize this section of people during this supposedly unholy “period”.

This can impact both their mental and physical well being causing major disruption to their work, education, and other aspects of their daily lives. A lot of people all over the world are forced to skip school due to discomfort and teasing from classmates. They are forced to let go of opportunities because of period poverty. The situation is much more dire in conflict zones and those hit by natural disasters.

About the Guest Speaker

Ms İlayda Eskitaşçıoğlu is a Ph.D. student, a Human Rights Lawyer and the Founder of We Need To Talk, an initiative working to improve health and sanitation for some of the most vulnerable groups in her home country Turkey. She was recently inducted into the 2020 Class of Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals by the UN Office of the Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth. İlayda is working to destroy the taboo culture around menstruation in our society and campaign for fairer taxation on menstrual hygiene products in Turkey.
