The Mars 2020 rover mission is part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort of robotic exploration of the Red Planet. The Mars 2020 mission addresses high-priority science goals for Mars exploration, including key questions about the potential for life on Mars. The mission takes the next step by not only seeking signs of habitable conditions on Mars in the ancient past but also searching for signs of past microbial life itself.
A future mission could potentially return these samples to Earth. That would help scientists study the samples in laboratories with special room-sized equipment that would be too large to take to Mars. The mission also provides opportunities to gather knowledge and demonstrate technologies that address the challenges of future human expeditions to Mars.
NASA invites students to submit essays to name NASA’s next Mars rover. Kindergarten through 12th-grade students has until Nov. 1, 2019, to submit their name. Register, learn more and submit entries (or sign up to be a judge).
By participating in the essay contest, students will:
- Learn about real NASA missions
- Apply their critical thinking skills
- Learn something new, and form questions about a place they may never have heard of
- Conduct research using NASA websites
- Applying their writing skills
The essays of finalists will be published on NASA’s Mars Website.
People worldwide will have an opportunity to let us know what their favorite names are and vote on the top names. Come back to take part in the poll in January 2020.
