Roles and Responsibilities

Asian Elephant is one of WWF’s priority species in Western Ghats Nilgiris Landscape. Human-elephant conflict remains one of the key challenges in conserving elephants across India. WWF India aims to both better understand Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) and develop effective interventions to reduce it.

WWF-India is seeking a Project Officer for the Western Ghats Nilgiris Landscape who is able to provide effective support for elephant research and conservation efforts in the field, with a particular focus on developing and implementing solutions for human-elephant conflict.

The Incumbent should be prepared to spend significant time in the field, work well in teams, and think critically about causes and solutions of HEC.

Job Profile

  • Human elephant conflict data collection in the field, including both ecological surveys and interviews with communities.
  • Human elephant data collection from forest department records using app
  • Work with government officials and community members to implement solutions for HEC
  • Following the collared elephants and collection of data on habitat use and behavior activities
  • Help conduct a field experiment on replacing lantana with native vegetation.
  • Support advocacy work to protect elephant corridors.

Qualifications, Experience and Competencies Required

  • Masters in Wildlife Biology, Zoology, Forestry, Ecology, Behavior Sciences, Botany, Wildlife Conservation, or any other discipline related to elephant biology and/or Human-Wildlife Conflict;
  • At least 2 to 3 years of experience post qualification.
  • Proficiency/fluency in English and Tamil. Proficiency/fluency in Malayalam also will be considered.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with research and conservation institutions
  • Working experience of elephant research and skills of tracking elephants
  • Data collection in the field
  • Engaging closely with government officials for conservation
  • Basic report composition skills (data entry, basic data analysis, and writing)
