ICRISAT seeks applications from dynamic and highly innovative Project Scientists in Quantitative Genetics. This position is required to establish a genomic selection pipeline for estimating genomic-estimated breeding values. The candidate will be responsible to mine large genotypic and phenotypic datasets, cleaning of the datasets and apply biometric approaches to study genotype by environment interactions.

The position is within the Rice Breeding Platform-South Asia Region. It will report to the Regional Breeding Lead – South Asia and is open for Indian nationals only.

Project Scientist

Eligibility-

  • Ph.D. in quantities genetics/statistics with 1-2 years of post-PhD experience in the genomic selection/quantitative genetics
  • High-quality publication record as evidenced by research papers in refereed journals in the area of GS/modelling
  • Extensive experience in quantitative genetics
  • Aptitude to work collegially and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural environments. 

Duties-

  • Mine large genotypic and phenotypic datasets, cleaning of the datasets and apply biometric approaches to study genotype by environment interactions
  • Establish genomic selection models for the targeted traits and validate the models on the obtained progenies for predicting the individual performances
  • Study trait-environment relationships and genotype-by-environment interactions for multiple traits and evaluate expected genetic gain for alternative breeding strategies enabled by genomic selection.
  • Actively participate in the strategic planning and research meeting of Rice Breeding Planform and Rice Breeding SA Cluster
  • Coordinate closely with the IRRI HQ team (RB Platform), ICRISAT team, ISARC team, project partners, other NAREs collaborators
  • Engage with ISARC to help build capacity in modernizing breeding programs and for the effective transfer of knowledge, technology, and strategy.

Scientist

Eligibility-

  • Ph.D. degree from a reputed university in plant breeding and/or genetics, with a minimum of six years of post-doctoral experience in genomics/plant breeding at a research institute/university
  • Must have experience working in applied genomics/system biology with comprehension of inter-disciplinary sciences, quantitative genetics theory and its application in practical plant breeding
  • Must have experience of genomics-assisted breeding (sequence-based trait mapping and breeding) in crop improvement and other biotechnology tools will be an additional desirable requirement
  • Statistical skills, knowledge of computer applications and software for data collection, management, and analysis
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is essential

Duties-

  • Establish sequencing based-trait mapping pipelines for rapid mapping of traits of interest and with development of SNP markers for molecular breeding
  • Establish sequencing-based breeding pipelines for enhancing genetic gains in rice and to optimize the genetic gain model in order to deliver higher rates of genetic gain
  • Launch a system biology platform for deciphering complex traits and better understanding the traits for breeding
  • Apply contemporary/quantitative genetics-based plant breeding techniques to create a solid and sound regional rice breeding pipeline
  • Coordinate the Harvest-Plus activities in terms of product development, evaluations, multi-location trials and help in large-scale disseminations
