JASHPUR DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION presents the 1st International Seminar on Heritage and Ecology at Jashpur, Chhattisgarh on 05 & 06 June 2019.
Culture is what sets humans apart from all other organisms and enables human to adapt, innovate in order to survive and enables humans to transmit the accumulated information for posterity of future generations.
Thus, the concept of cultural heritage encompasses a wide array of tangible as well as intangible aspects of culture and human existence. UNESCO has defined ‘cultural heritage’ as the entire corpus of material signs – either artistic or symbolic – handed on by the past to each culture and, therefore, to the whole of humankind and states that the preservation and the presentation of the cultural heritage are therefore a cornerstone of any cultural policy. cultural heritage considered both in time and space has broadened the concept to include both the man-made materials such as architectural complexes, archaeological sites and the natural environment.
It also covers the nonphysical cultural heritage such as the signs and symbols passed on by oral transmission, artistic and literary forms of expression, languages, ways of life, myths, beliefs and rituals, value systems and traditional knowledge and customary practices pertaining to the management of resources and environment.
This intangible cultural heritage is manifested inter alia in the oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage; performing arts; social practices, rituals and festive events; knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe; traditional craftsmanship.
Such are transmitted from generation to generation, constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
A cultural heritage that encompasses Cultural landscapes embraces a diversity of manifestations of the interaction between humankind and its natural environment representing the “combined works of nature and of man under the influence of the physical constraints and/or opportunities presented by their natural environment.
The continued existence of traditional forms of cultural landscapes supports biological diversity in many regions of the world. Thus, the seminar is being organized with the purpose to better inform and understand the diverse dimensions of cultural heritage so as to work towards the protection of traditional cultural landscapes and thereby contribute towards maintaining biological diversity and promotes sustainable development.
Considering the importance of cultural heritage and landscapes in the continuous human quest for creativity and sustainable interaction with nature, the seminar is being organized with the goal of presenting the rich repository of the cultural heritage of the people of Chhattisgarh.
