IIT Roorkee is conducting a three-day international short term course on Seismic Design of Non-structural Components in Buildings from March 3 to 5, 2020.

The objective of this 3-day short term course is to familiarise the participants with the state-of-the-art integrated & holistic approach to the understanding of the seismic performance and behavior and mitigation of non-structural damage in new and existing buildings during earthquakes, particularly Schools, Hospitals, Buildings housing Emergency Facilities and Heritage Buildings of special societal interest.

  • Indian Codes and Design Guidelines for the design of non-structural components
  • Lessons from observed damages to Interior Architectural Systems during past earthquakes
  • Overview of Research and Codes / Design Guidelines for Interior Architectural Systems
  • State-of-the-art international best design practices of Interior Architectural Systems e.g. Partitions, Ceilings, etc.
  • Estimation of seismic demand on non-structural components in buildings
  • Estimation of seismic demand on non-structural components in buildings
  • Lessons from observed damages to Exterior Architectural Systems during past earthquakes
  • Overview of Research and Codes / Design Guidelines for Exterior Architectural Systems
  • State-of-the-art international best design practices of Exterior Architectural Systems e.g. Facades, Claddings, Curtain-Wall Systems etc.
  • Lessons from observed damages to Storage Systems and Equipments during past earthquakes
  • Overview of Research and Codes / Design Guidelines for Storage Systems and Equipments
  • State-of-the-art international best design practices of Storage Racks, Shelving Systems, Wine-Barrel Storage Systems, Contents etc.
  • State-of-the-art international best design practices of MEP / HVAC Equipment Systems and associated components
  • Course Conclusion – Future Perspectives and Directions
Who can Attend?

The short course has been designed to apprise the practicing architects/ engineers, students, faculty members, researchers, authorities involved in the approval and construction of new buildings and repair and rehabilitation of existing buildings, with the state-of-the-art international best practices in the seismic design of architectural systems and non-structural components in buildings.
