The college of Nursing, Christian Medical College is conducting a short term course on Peritoneal Dialysis Nursing from January 20 to February 15, 2020. This short course is designed to prepare registered nurses working in nephrology settings with specialized knowledge, skills, and competence in providing Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) to patients with End-Stage Renal Disease.
It is also aimed to equip them to educate, train and counsel patients and caregivers on various aspects of Peritoneal Dialysis Therapy. The nurses through training can take up autonomous roles as educators, facilitators, and counselors, thus functioning as integral members of the PD team.

Objectives

The course participants will be able to:

  • Relate the anatomy and physiology of kidneys to pathophysiology and management of Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Understand the disease process, identify symptoms and manage patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.
  • Interpret and draw inferences to relevant investigation findings
  • Identify fluid, electrolyte and acid-base imbalances and intervene appropriately.
Course Content
  1. Review of the anatomy of kidney, Physiology of urine formation.
  2. Renal Assessment, Common Investigations, Inference
  3. Fluid and Electrolyte imbalances- Identification and Management
  4. Peritoneal Dialysis- Principles and Concepts
  5. Selection and Assessment of Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis
  6. PD catheter Insertion- Procedure, Responsibilities of PD nurse
  7. Peritoneal Dialysis Exchange- the procedure
  8. Complications of Peritoneal Dialysis- Prevention, Identification and Management
  9. Infection Control Practices in the PD unit, Nutritional considerations for patients with PD
  10. Components in counseling and training of patients and care givers
Who can Attend?

Nurses with GNM, B.Sc or M.Sc qualification.
