University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh is conducting a conference on Crimes Against Women: Issues and Remedies on Jan 24, 2020.

About the Conference

Women and girls in South Asia are born into a social and cultural system steeped in inequality and discrimination. They receive an unfair share of opportunities, attention to and resources from the moment of their conception. Crime against women has been a bane of India’s development efforts and contribute to about 10% of all the crimes. Common forms of violence against women in India include acts such as domestic abuse, sexual assault, and murder.

Official statistics from the National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB) reveal a trend of rising crimes against women. Cultural practices in India such as dowry, child marriage, sati, devadasi tradition and Ill treatment of widows enhance the girls and women’s vulnerability to the experience of violence. Gender differential treatment in nutrition, health care, education, mobility and other life opportunities places girls’ and women at a higher risk of violence of all kinds.

India has also been a party to several international human rights conventions like Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), 1979 and has prompted legal reforms, new legislations, beefing up of institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women and instituting policies that seek to address women’s vulnerability in various arenas.

The very survival of our faith in India’s democracy rests on facilitating a legal and public institutional system that actively encourages and supports the agency of women and their freedom. To ensure this, it is morally imperative for the police to act professionally and follow due process on matters of all crimes against women; and for lawyers and judges to turn up in court and do their jobs well.

This conference is being organised to discuss the issues and remedies of the same.
