About the Programmes
The programmes offered by the Department are a unique interdisciplinary orientation to nurture new fields of inquiry in the domain of media, cultural, and communication studies.
It will equip the students to handle media technologies, inculcate journalistic skills, and develop an analytical mind to enter the world of the futuristic digital media industry. These programmes build the foundation for the students to produce cutting edge documentaries, films, videos, photographs, and other forms of creative expressions.
Students undergo training in handling media equipment, journalistic skill building, and industrial training opportunities through compulsory media internship. The outcome of such a rigorous programme is the production of documentaries, short films, and a range of journalistic pieces in print and online media.
The courses in Culture and Media Studies emphasizes on introduction to cultural studies, media theories, photography, video production and basics of journalism in the first semester. The second-semester trains the students in media research methods, video editing, film aesthetics, writing skills for digital and multimedia.
The third semester equips the students to apply the theoretical concepts in the analysis of indigenous culture, Indian cinema, and development communication. The students develop their entrepreneurial skills through the course on advertising and public relations, media organization and management, and web journalism.
The final semester is meant for compulsory media internship, production of documentary and a research dissertation.
After completion of these courses (M.A. & PG Diploma), students will be able to find jobs in the media industry as a journalist, filmmaker, editor, photographer, media analyst, PR Manager, digital media content writer, and media entrepreneur.
Who can apply
For M.A. & PG Diploma: Students having graduation degree (three years) in any disciplines from any recognized university possessing a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grade in aggregate for General category and 45% marks for OBC, SC, ST, and EWS candidates.
For Ph.D.: Students having a consistently good academic record with 55% in their undergraduate and postgraduate for General category students and 5% relaxation for students of OBC, SC, ST &EWS candidates.
Students having their Masters degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, Cinema Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Communication Studies are eligible to apply.
Students having UGC-NET, NET-JRF in Mass Communication and Journalism are exempted from the written examination but they have to register online and have to attend the viva-voce.
International/Foreign students can apply for all the above three programmes through ICSSR OR any other proper channel and have to appear for the viva-voce.
How to apply
The entrance test will have 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) on general knowledge, current affairs, research aptitude, mental ability, reasoning, and few questions related to journalism and media.
