Barefoot Media: A Workshop on Community Journalism @ Sambhaavnaa Institute, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh [November 10-14]: Registrations Open

barefoot media workshop

About the workshop
The Barefoot Media Workshop offers a complete guide to become a barefoot journalist or a community communicator.  When we see some social, political or cultural relevance to an event or incident, and start sharing the facts, views and opinions about that event, it starts evolving to be media.
When this process culminates in a concrete form like a newsletter, a blog or a radio program and reach out to a particular  community of people, it is called Community Media, or as we fondly call it Barefoot Media.
Keeping the evolving nature of Media in mind, this workshop aims to address the following questions:

  • What is media?
  • How does it work?
  • What is the politics of mainstream media today? Do newspapers and news channels actually cover ‘real’ news?
  • Whose voice is represented in mainstream media? Why is this happening?
  • What are the new kinds of media?
  • As citizens, can we create our own media? If yes, what is the process for such media creation?
  • How can we disseminate the media produced by us to an audience?
  • What is the relationship between media and democracy?

And many more similar concerns…..
This workshop will be conducted through a series of interactive lectures, discussions and presentations. The theoretical and practical aspects of various forms of media will be discussed and the participants could focus (individually or in group) on what they are interested to work on/learn more about.
The participants will have an opportunity to engage with the local community at Kandbari and Palampur during the course of the workshop to produce media content. The participants will also produce a newsletter (or some form of media product) by the end of the workshop.  The participants will be given certificate after they complete the workshop course.
Who is this workshop for?
If you are a person who is concerned about the world around you, disoriented with how the truth is being misrepresented by mainstream media and are motivated to take charge, create and share your own media, this workshop is for you!  Or else if you simply want to understand the nature and character of media in today’s world and want to be more informed and enlightened, this workshop is for you.
You need not be a trained journalist or work in a news-house to understand, evolve and practice media tools, communicate and share stories about your community with the world.  If you want to, you can learn the tools and strategies to do it. It is a continuous learning process.
Women participants are especially important and welcome as journalism is often considered to be the domain of men.
This workshop is designed for socio-political activists, students, amateur/aspiring journalists, panchayat workers, and any citizen who is keen to understand the dynamics of media and learn the basic skills to create and disseminate their own media.
