The Triveni Centre for Political Data at Ashoka University, Sonipat, Haryana invites applications for the Winter Internship Programme 2019.
Listed below are projects and brief description of the projects. You will be selecting up to 3 projects. If selected, we will do our best to match you with your first preference. Some of the projects have a required skillset so please read these carefully.
- Building profiles of Indian politicians: Merging data on candidates profiles and producing descriptive statistics on the sociological profile of MPs and MLAs, in a selection of states. Specifically, you will be using an OCR software (will be trained) to extract data from PDFs for Vidhan Sabhas into a tabular form and then linking the extracted data to our current database. (Required skills: R, Excel)
- Political family: Collecting data on political family affiliations of MPs and MLAs, for a selection of states, based on a schema which will be provided. (Required skills: Excel)
- Incumbency mapping: Map politicians across years, in both Assembly and General elections using TCPD’s Surf software. Implement an R script to remove false negatives. Review all mappings manually and on Surf. Start with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. (Required skills: R, Excel)
- Field work: Data collection on sociological attributes such as caste and religion of politicians for a selection of states.
At the end of your internship you will be required to write a short paper on the work you have done during the internship and deliver a final presentation.
Tentative internship dates: December 18 – January 17, 2019 (this is flexible)
Expected hour commitment: 40 hours/week
Compensation: This is contingent on the duration of the exact dates of the internship. However roughly speaking, the approximate pay is Rs.14000/month.
