While Fellows are hired institutionally at IIHS, each is hired into a specific and on-going research-based project. These projects are the Fellow’s first home within the institution. They are thus expected to account for up to half of the Fellow’s time, though this can vary for different projects.
- Post-Doctoral Fellow in Urban Planning Education
This position will involve research on urban planning education and its role in preparing practitioners to deal with questions of urban equality in their professional practice and will be carried out in close cooperation with our partners at UCL (University College London). The researcher will work closely with the KNOW project team at IIHS on a range of research activities.
2. Post-Doctoral Fellow in Urban Energy Systems
Cities are emerging as important sites for mediating sustainable energy transitions, which are crucial for meeting development, climate, and environmental goals. Much of the urban energy sector is hugely fragmented across national, regional and local taxes and across sectors and fuel-types, with weak mandates and ambiguous incentives.
3. Post-Doctoral Fellow in Deindustrialisation in Cities of the Global South and Employment
This position will involve research that focuses broadly on how cities in developing countries can generate equitable growth trajectories and broad-based employment opportunities with decent wages in light of “premature deindustrialization” (Rodrik 2016) and persistent informality (Chen 2012).
4. Post-Doctoral Fellow / Senior Research Associate in Machine Learning and Computer Vision
The Fellow / Senior Research Associate will also be expected to develop innovative analysis methods that integrate multiple kinds of urban datasets. For instance, deeper insights can be generated by integrating satellite imagery, census data, data from administrative and planning agencies and primary survey data, than what any of these datasets can individually provide. The fellowship/research position also provides the opportunity to explore new methods of data collection.
5. Post-Doctoral Fellow / Senior Research Associate in Land Economy & Urban Finance
The project seeks to develop theoretical and conceptual frames to understand the urban land economy appropriate for urban and periurban areas in India. These frames would be informed by structures and dynamics of land & real estate markets, practices of formality/ informality and governance, prevailing here. The project will draw on both qualitative and quantitative methods.
